HPD: Murder charge filed in Willowbrook Mall shooting

HOUSTON – A man accused in Wednesday's deadly shooting at Willowbrook Mall appeared before a judge Saturday morning.

Dante Thomas, 20, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault of a family member and murder. He was also previously charged in the stabbing death of his girlfriend.

A judge assigned him no bond Saturday morning.

He is accused of shooting and killing his great aunt, Charlotte Ellis, 68, and wounding his second cousin, Damitra Ellis, 45, while the two were sitting inside a truck in the mall parking lot.

Damitra Ellis is still at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Thomas is already accused of stabbing his girlfriend, Linda Vu, to death in front of her young children, inside their apartment in January.

"One day, my sister is here working two jobs to provide for her family and the next day, she's maliciously murdered," said David Do, Vu's brother, in an exclusive interview with KPRC 2 News.

Thomas was charged with murder in connection with Vu's death, but posted bond soon after.

"My family was definitely shocked that he was able to post bond," said David Do. "To let someone out just that easily, it was just putting gasoline on the fire."

The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force arrested Thomas at a gas station in northwest Harris County on Thursday, after investigators began looking for him following the shooting at Willowbrook Mall.

Thomas' bond has been revoked.
