HOUSTON – A woman said she is upset after her cat was found mutilated and killed.
Anyone who knows Debbie Smith knows she is an animal lover. She and her family have rescued countless dogs and cats who all became part of their family.
"I loved her, and to see somebody had done something like that to her broke my heart,” said Smith.
Debbie struggled to hold back her tears as she described her beautiful cat Mercury, who was found dead Wednesday morning.
"I can’t imagine any human being doing anything like that to an innocent animal," said Smith.
The day started out like any other, but when she got a call from her neighbor, she knew something was wrong.
"I said, 'No, no. Did an animal get her?' And (they) said, 'No, it was a person, a human.' That is when she told me she had been cut in half," said Smith.
Smith said she called Harris County Precinct 5 Constables officer to make a report. The deputies told her it appeared the cat was killed somewhere else and then her body was dumped in the bushes behind their house.
"Her face was a grimace of pure terror, and extreme pain," Smith said. "Her face, it didn’t even look like the same cat. Her face was just a grimace," said Smith.
Smith said she rescued Mercury when she was just a kitten, along with Mercury's four siblings. She believes the person who killed Mercury had to have come on her property in order to trap the cat.
"This is the kind of person that could move onto people, or maybe children," said Smith.
